Hermès Parfums is the fragrance and beauty division of the luxury house Hermès, known for its independence, expert craftsmanship, and the use of high-quality, natural raw materials. It stands out as one of the few luxury houses to employ its own exclusive perfumers, known as "noses"

      History and Heritage

      • Early Beginnings: While Hermès was founded in 1837 as a harness and saddlery maker, its journey into perfumery began with confidential, tailor-made special orders in the 1930s.

      • First Fragrance: The official entry into the commercial perfume market occurred in 1951 with the launch of the unisex scent Eau d'Hermès, created by the legendary perfumer Edmond Roudnitska. This fragrance was designed to evoke the subtle, spicy aroma of the inside of an empty Hermès leather bag, a tribute to the brand's equestrian roots.

      • Establishment: The perfume business was transferred to a dedicated subsidiary, Comptoir Nouveau de la Parfumerie, and over the decades, a "precious library" of fragrances was built

      The Role of In-House Perfumers

A key differentiator for Hermès Parfums is its commitment to in-house perfumers, which allows for creative freedom and a unique olfactory signature

      • Jean-Claude Ellena: Appointed as the first exclusive in-house perfumer in 2004, Ellena structured the fragrance genealogy into distinct collections like the Colognes, the Garden-Perfumes (Un Jardin series), the Novel-Perfumes, and the exclusive Hermessence line. His iconic creation, Terre d'Hermès (2006), is known for its earthy, woody, and mineral notes.

      • Christine Nagel: Nagel joined Hermès in 2014 and succeeded Jean-Claude Ellena as the sole in-house perfumer and Director of Olfactive Creation in 2016. She brought a modern touch, creating scents like Twilly d'Hermès (2017), which features a playful mix of ginger, tuberose, and sandalwood

      Craftsmanship and Philosophy

      • Production: Hermès produces all of its perfumes in its own workshops at Le Vaudreuil, in Normandy, maintaining tight control over quality and craftsmanship.

      • Brand Identity: The fragrances reflect the overall Hermès philosophy of timeless elegance, quality, and a unique, personal expression of luxury. Perfumes are seen as artistic creations and stories, rather than just commercial products.

      • Expansion: In 2020, the fragrance division expanded to include a new "beauty" métier, launching the Rouge Hermès lipstick collection and other makeup lines
